Kate Middleton’s Wedding Style
We’re dying to know what Kate’s wedding dress will look like, but the ensembles she’s worn as a wedding guest might provide some clues about what she’ll wear to her own. Above, In May of 2006, Kate attended her first wedding with the entire royal family—the marriage of Camilla Parker Bowles’ daughter Laura to Harry Lopes. Kate wore a cream-colored brocade coat, but the real focal point of her look was her whimsical feathered hat. While it’s nearly certain that Kate will wear a traditional tiara and veil for her wedding ceremony, perhaps she’ll don a more festive chapeau for her reception. Below, While Kate typically wears more subdued styles, the ensemble she wore to the 2009 wedding of Captain Nicholas Van Cutsem to Alice Hadden-Paton made a bit more of a statement. Again, she chose a brocade pattern—a particularly regal fabrication that could work on a wedding gown. The coat also features a fitted natural waist—highlighting Kate’s trim figure.
The dress Kate wore to Harry Meade and Rosie Bradford’s wedding combined two of her fashion must-haves—the color blue and and the designer Issa. Kate wore a now iconic blue wedding dress by the same designer for her first post-engagement appearance with William. It’s clear Kate loves that bright cobalt blue—is it a possible color for her bridesmaid dresses? And even though Bruce Oldfield is the rumored designer for Kate’s ceremony gown, perhaps Issa is in the running to create Kate’s party dress.

Kate’s most recent ensemble as a wedding guest caused quite a scandale in the British press. In January, she sported a black velvet Libelula coat over a sheer top to the nuptials of Louise Stourton and Harry Aubrey-Fletcher. While the old guard might think black is an inappropriate color to wear to a wedding, it’s actually considered acceptable—and quite stylish—nowadays. And we love the idea of wearing a coat over a sexy dress—we could certainly picture Kate in a long coat with a train worn over a more revealing gown.

Kate attended the 2008 wedding of Lady Rose Windsor to George Gilman solo—Prince William was at military training in the Caribbean. Again, she sported a fun feathered fascinator, this time with a dress that showed off more of her décolletage—a neckline that Kate clearly prefers. Also note the light, airy fabrication on the skirt; it seems that Kate likes fabrics that offer a bit of movement.
